Hospitals are beginning to take a step in the right direction towards incorporating organic food into their meals. Take a look at these examples I found in various places through the net.

Catholic Healthcare West has an education program about the ecological impacts of the food system and is eliminate rBGH use in dairy.
* Kaiser Permanente: is creating guidelines for sustainable food sourcing that includes local, antibiotic/hormone-free meats and dairy, and serving fresh fruit for desert. It has farmer’s markets at 25 of its medical facilities.
* Dominican Hospital (Santa Cruz, California) buys produce from a local organic farm and has a vegetable and flower garden on-site.
* Good Shepherd Medical Center (Hermiston, Oregon) has eliminated fat fryers, serves organic produce and rBGH-free milk, and is eliminating food additives. Instead of beef, the hospital serves naturally lean bison.
* St. Luke’s Hospital (Duluth, Minnesota) serves only fair-trade coffee, rBGH-free milk, and wild salmon, and has a locally grown organic salad bar.

Is Organic Raw Milk Better Than Pasteurized?

Most people would argue they will not drink unpasteurized milk because it will make them sick. Contrary to belief after all these years the truth may be that organic milk is actually better for us and safer to drink. In the late 1930’s is when the big stink about the Raw milk being bad for us was brought about. And why might we ask ourselves would this be? It was due to unsanitary safety measures. Take a look at this insert from:

According to Dr. Aajonus Vonderplanitz, a Ph.D. in Nutrition located in Washington, D.C., in Raw Milk; Udderly Health-giving!:

The bad rhetoric about raw milk as a carrier for disease began in late 1930’s when, as Knudsen Dairy employee Alton Eliason testified, conglomerate Knudsen Dairy began a ruthless conspiracy to eliminate its small competitors and ensure less spoiled milk. Knudsen began pasteurizing its dairy products but few people bought them because they were inferior in taste and health-giving properties. Knudsen claimed that pasteurized dairy was the only safe dairy and hired doctors, without research, to testify that raw milk caused diseases. They paid and worked with health officials to outlaw public and farm sales of raw milk. They paid writers to tell gruesome tales about dirty raw milk being a carrier of disease. City dwellers began to believe that anyone who drank it was crazy or stupid. However, the people who worked with raw milk and drank it regularly were not fooled. The campaign to force pasteurization down people’s throats is still alive today and your article continued it.

“Over 290 billion glasses of raw milk have been consumed in the USA since 1960 without one epidemic and not one scientifically associated case of sickness,” reported biological attorney Raymond A. Novell. “However, pasteurized dairy has been scientifically proved to have caused numerous epidemics, including one that affected 197,000 people; and that fact is from CDC.”

Next time we might ask ourselves twice and think organic when buying raw milk.

There’s many organic inspired restaurants around in every state I’m sure. This one caught my attention. Its located in downtown Bergen Street New York I believe. What a cute little organic inspired store. Their website is http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/18/dining/18take.html?ref=dining. If you are not in the mood for a dinner or lunch they soon have Vegan Birthday Cakes coming. Now that’s something Ive certainly never heard about. Interesting treat I must add stay tuned for more details on their site.

My Organic Garden Update

Wow its unbelievable my garden has produced so many Cucumbers in the last week. I was shocked when I went out over the weekend to view the garden. I planted it about a month and a half ago nothing big or special just a small 4 row backyard garden. A row of corn, a row of cucumbers and squash, tomatoes, peppers, and peas on another row.

With this being my first experience with a garden I was actually skeptical about it. I used no fertilizers or pesticides and hoped it would somehow manage to grow. To my surprise its doing great and the veggies are delectable. The cucumbers are almost twice the size of the ones I normally purchase from my local food markets and the taste it crisp and fresh. Take it from me, if I can do it anyone can. Its nt to late to start growing your very own Organic garden today and the rewards are great! I will try and get some pictures this afternoon so you can view how beautiful my veggies truly are.

Orgainc Things You May Not Know

Organic FoodHeres some great information I have learned throughout my search for information for Organically grown food. Did you know that each farm claiming to grown Organic foods has to undergo vigorous testing and there are many tests to pass to become legal tender for stating Organically grown. Not all farms somehow pass this test.

Also the price of Organic foods tends to be in the bracket from 10-40 percent higher than most conventional foods. But what about the taste? Statistics have shown and proved the taste of Organically grown foods compared to conventional is hands down better. Just a few fun facts you may not know to help you in you education of the Organic food market. Also the want for Organic foods has increased the past three years by at least 10 percent and sometimes 20. Wow! This has allowed for larger retailers such as Wal Mart to begin carrying Organic foods which in turn make them easier for us to find.

Check out www.treehugger.com for this and more information.

While doing some reading on the latest Organic Food news I came across and article that puzzled my brain. It seems theres big bucks to be paid out when coming to the aid of the richest of farmers in America. To be exact Billions of dollars spent. But why is the Organic Food Industry being nickeled and dimmed? Why are we forced to pay so much for Organic Food some may wonder, but its the fault of the government for not giving the Organic Food farmers the appreciation and funding they need so desperately and deserve. When is America going to stand up for themselves and see that a more healthy lifestyle lies in the hands of the Organic Food Industry. Please read up on this article at www.organicconsumers.org. It will really open your eyes to whats going on and give you insight to how the government really needs to make a change.

Organic Baby on Board

I’ve been MIA from this blog from about a week and a half because I just had a beautiful baby girl. She was a little early, so I had to spend more time in the hospital than usual. One of the things that I am now looking ahead to is how to keep her as healthy as possible. Because of that, I am beginning my research into the world of organic baby food. As of right now, she is on formula and will be for some time. However, I don’t think it is too soon to begin planning for the future and figuring out what kind of diet I will have her on when I can finally begin giving her baby food.

One of the things I have found in my research so far is that the organic baby food industry is booming!!! From the local grocery store (Publix devotes an entire section of their store to organic foods) to online companies that specialize in organic baby food, there are a lot of options for people looking to feed their baby the best in organics. One brand I am eager to check out is Earth’s Best Baby Food. They have the array of products I am looking for and the attractive branding that would trick any kid into thinking this is regular old junk food!

For those of you who have experimented with organic baby foods, what brands have you found to work best for you?

I’ve Done It — I Am Organically Online

Posted on March 11th, 2008 by admin

I used to be one of those people that resisted the pull of living an online life. You know the type — won’t buy clothing online when I could just got to the mall for instant gratification; won’t buy books online when Borders is right down the street. So, it’s not surprising that I’ve never, ever considered buying online for organic food and items when I could just visit my local farmer’s market.

But then last weekend, an interesting dilemma presented itself to me: what happens when my organic tomatoes are nowhere in sight? What happens when the farmer’s market isn’t yielding a great deal of organic goods when I need them?

Well, I did, in fact, find my answer online in the form of the Organic Mall. OMG!!! They have everything —from organic food that you can handily purchase online and have delivered right to your door sans grocery bags and long, long searches to organic clothing and various other personal products. It’s an organic-lovers dream, all presented in a nice and neat Web site. So, I have officially yielded to the Internet and have used it to provide me with yet another convenient way of living a much simpler, stress-free and now, organic, lifestyle.
