Organic farming looks to become a new emerging industry in Alabama as consumer worries about health and environmental issues that comes with the production and consumption of conventionally produced food. There are a number of small-scale organic farms that exist that emphasize the use of manure and compost to nourish the soil rather then chemical based fertilizers.
As of 2006 there are 20 farms that have been certified to be Organic by the USDA. As this sustainable method of organic farming gains popularity and support in Alabama, organic production improvements and innovations and additional farms will surely follow.
